Arabica vs Robusta vs Everything Else: A Guide to Coffee Bean Types

Wondering what are the different types of coffee beans? The roast, the packaging, the price — none of it matters as much as the bean. Here's what nobody on the label is telling you.

If you've ever bought beans that said "premium" on the bag and it still tasted like regret, hi, this one's for you.

The thing that actually decides how your coffee tastes isn't the roast level or the fancy kraft paper bag. It's the bean species inside — and most brands treat that part like a footnote.

There are four of them. Most people have only heard of two. Here's the full picture.

Arabica

Ā

The one specialty coffee is built on.

Arabica is behind every bag with tasting notes that read like a dessert menu. The hype is mostly deserved.

It's a fussy plant — grows best up in the hills, between 600 and 2,000 metres, and doesn't do well when conditions aren't ideal. That's part of why it costs more. What you get in return is a smoother, more complex cup. Fruity, floral, sometimes chocolatey, with a brightness that no other bean quite matches.

In India, most Arabica comes from the hill estates of Karnataka — Chikmagalur, Coorg, the Baba Budangiri range. Legend has it coffee first arrived here centuries ago, smuggled in by a wandering saint named Baba Budan. Whether or not you believe the story, the coffee from these hills is genuinely worth seeking out.

Best brewed as a pour-over or AeroPress. Slow, and worth it.

Robusta

Ā

Stronger, bolder, and far more underrated than it gets credit for.

Robusta grows in heat, handles humidity, and produces almost double the yield of Arabica. It's the workhorse — and it doesn't apologise for it.

The cup is earthier, more bitter, with nearly twice the caffeine. What it does better than anything else is crema — that thick, golden foam on a good espresso — and holding its ground under milk. It's the reason South Indian filter coffee hits the way it does.

India is one of the bigger Robusta producers in the world. Most of it comes out of Kerala, parts of Karnataka, and the Eastern Ghats of Andhra Pradesh.

Best brewed as filter coffee or espresso. If you've been sleeping on Robusta, it's time to reconsider.

Liberica & Excelsa

Ā

The rare ones — and the interesting ones.

Liberica is grown mostly in the Philippines and Malaysia. Bigger beans, oddly shaped, and a cup unlike anything else — smoky, woody, with a floral edge that genuinely surprises you. Hard to find in India, but worth the hunt.

Excelsa, now classified as a variety of Liberica, is tart and fruity — the kind of thing that adds a layer of complexity to a blend without taking it over. Also niche, also worth trying if you come across it.

Which One's For You?

It depends less on the bean and more on the cup.

After something bright and layered? Single-origin Arabica, brewed slow.

After something strong that plays well with milk? A Robusta-forward blend or the classic 80/20 coffee-chicory mix.

Making espresso? Most good blends sit somewhere in between — 70–80% Arabica for sweetness, 20–30% Robusta for body and crema.

Blending isn't cutting corners. It's just smart.

A Note on Labels

"100% Arabica" is a real quality signal — but the roast date matters just as much. A bag roasted three weeks ago will beat a "premium" bag from six months ago every single time, regardless of bean.

There's no universally better bean. Just a better match for what's in your cup that morning. Build your ritual with our quality coffee beans and give your day the start it deserves.
